AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM. OUR CHILDREN ARE IN TROUBLE. I’ve seen it in my students, I see it in what is happening today. In Crying in the Wilderness: A Voice for America’s Children, you will read real stories with a twist that will touch your heart, wake you up to what needs to be addressed and tell you how you can help.
WE HAVE BEEN APATHETIC FAR TOO LONG! IT'S TIME TO ACT. If we had addressed children's problems decades
ago, we wouldn’t be dealing with many of the crises that we face today
-- the economy, the increasing income gap between the poor and the
wealthy, the dwindling tax base, crumbling infrastructure, the complete
failure of our penal system to rehabilitate criminals, the escalation
of crime -- most especially, crimes against children. I am a leader who has some answers, some solutions that work.
Get involved! Regardless of the crisis facing the child - abuse, neglect, unsafe streets, ineffective schools, untreated learning disabilities, dysfunctional families, divorce - in single or two parent homes I have found one common denominator. When one person, teacher, parent, mentor, friend, cares enough to build a network of support for a child, that child has a better chance at survival and success.
Open your heart – America’s children are your children. Together, we can do this. Together, we can change the future.
“I watched them die a little each day: Steven, Jerry,
Maria, Doug, Josie, Billy, Chrissie, Curt, Nicky, Tomiko, Benjamin,
Wally, Jonathan, Amar, Anthony -- more names than I will ever remember,
yet children I will never forget...”
In Crying in the Wilderness:
A Voice for America’s Children,
you will read about the lives of some
of the at-risk children I have known. You will learn why some survived
to lead productive lives, while others were lost to apathy, abuse and
neglect. Prior to publication, I researched accessible school
records regarding these children until they left San Diego, graduated
or dropped out of high school. I located records for thirty-four who
were students at-risk when I knew them. What struck me as I
reviewed each case was the accuracy of my predictions. One hopeful
sign: in reliving their stories and tracing their lives, I discovered
reasons why we lose our most vulnerable children and what we can do to
save them. Perhaps as you read each chapter, you too will be able to predict the outcome of these young lives and identify those who survived and those lost because adults failed to listen - or worse, failed to care.
Can we -- you and I -- make a difference for generations yet to come? My goal is to lead readers to recognize damaged children, study possible solutions and find avenues for involvement.
None of our children will be safe until we build a safe America for all of our children, one child at a time. That is the mission of my book.
